IROQUOIS STONE CARVINGS
Up to early historic times Iroquois artists carved stone pipes (plain, effigy), beads, rare burial figurines, occasional bowls. In the summer of 1969 IROQRAFTS obtained stone and encouraged craftsmen to make pipes. By October we began the fine art carvings here at Ohsweken and it has been full-steam ahead ever since! Our artists generally are young men and women from early teens to late 30's who have found in this medium a new way to express the Iroquois. Many tons of stone are now used yearly. Many are learning this art (we have worked with over 260, and there are many working independent of us) both from friends and in the school system. It has become a firmly entrenched art form at Six Nations and has spread to many other reserves (Cattaraugus, Tyendenaga, Kahnawake, Akwesasne, and perhaps others about which we have not yet heard). At Tuscarora, Duff Wilson has done much to develop fellow artists; one of his protgs, Joe Jacobs, Cayuga from Six Nations, carved a stone doorway for the House of Parliament in Ottawa. Iroquois stone sculptures are now in the permanent collections of many museums.
Two types of steatite (soapstone) are used: a dark green Canadian stone found near one of the Mohawk reserves; and a brownish stone from the old Tuscarora home-land. From time to time we obtain white gypsum sculptures from stone beneath the Reserve. All carvings marketed by IROQRAFTS are marked with a registration number, and the artist's real ('Indian') name, nation, clan.

Greatest distance wins...ideally, over 1 mile! Also played as a Longhouse curative rite. Either of these types of wood are used; juneberry, cherry, ironwood. TOO LONG FOR CANADA POST-Canpar or UPS only. (Seneca)
06-108 MUDCAT: Approx. 3"; played the same as the long snakes. (Seneca)
LACROSSE STICKS: Teams from many Iroquois reserves still participate in outdoor and indoor (box-lacrosse) in all-Iroquois leagues, as well as in non-Indian lacrosse leagues. This ancient Indian game now spread world wide is played with Iroquois style sticks (not your modern plastic netted 'Tupperware' sticks) the majority of which are Iroquois (Mohawk) made...although much harder to obtain as time passes both for loss of good hickory stands and fewer crafts persons. Lacrosse is also a curing rite (book #24-11010). We offer the contemporary BOX lacrosse sticks (approx. 46"), leather and rawhide netting. Some time around 1925 this began replacing the Field lacrosse which themselves replaced the ancient style sticks. Also read book #24-32913 for much on Lacrosse. These sticks are too long for international postal mail (UPS okay).

09-114 WATER DRUM: The ONLY Iroquois drum. Small keg into which a small amount of water is poured through a bunghole. The tightened wet leather is what gives this drum its characteristic high "ping-ping: sound... not, as one often reads, the amount of water inside. Today, singers are generally switching to a drum made of a heavy plastic piping. this produces the same sound as the traditional wood drum, but has the considerable advantage of not moldering or splitting...common nuisance maintenance problems of wood drums. As a result, it is almost impossible for us now to get anyone to make wood drums. (Note: For those who may think wood drums are the traditional drum, note that in the old days a drum was made of a covered clay pot; wood drums came about with the advent of small wooden kegs from traders. These were an improvement over the fragile clay pots, as the plastic now is an improvement over wood. (Cayuga)

SASHES: For waist, chest, or old-time Turban. The 'old-time' element needed to create a good old Indian or Mountain man outfit (see booklist item #24-26900). NOTE TO US CUSTOMERS. Although Canada has entered into a so-called "FREE TRADE" agreement with the USA, the US continues to set non-tariff barriers to trade. Textiles are one such area to be 'hammered' by quotas and paper work requirements to protect US industry from the Canadians. Dealers are warned that orders of more than a very few (we have no idea what the 'magic' cut-off is) sashes or garters may be stopped by US Custom. Some orders slip through, others do not. Orders are sent at your risk and expense. Very large buyers (several dozen) should consider using UPS and learning from their brokerage department what is involved. To date small retail orders for a sash and a pair of garters have not been problems. BUT the warning applies.

IROQUOIS FLAG.... "THE HIAWATHA (WAMPUM) BELT"
The Hiawatha Wampum Belt is one of the most significant of all Iroquois Belts. The symbolism reflect the 'TREE of PEACE' planted at Onondaga; to each side is a path which runs from the other League nations to the central Council Fire at Onondaga. A few years ago some enterprising Iroquois began production of this design on a flag to represent the Great League when a situation arose in which a flag for the Confederacy would be appropriate. Several sources now offer this.
IROQRAFTS recently released this in a variety of forms:
23-79000 3' x 5' without TOGGLE or Cord (used when running the flag pole), for wall display.
23-79001 3' x 5' with TOGGLE and Cord (used when running the flag pole), for wall display.
23-79002 Car Aerial Flag, 4 1/2" x 6". With VELCRO tab at one end which is wrapped around the aerial to secure in place.
Background is a rich purple colour very much like the blue area on Quohag shells from which the best wampum is made. Design is in white. Made of strong knitted polyester..Duraknit.
23-101 Gold plated 'Enamel Lapel pin' also available,...SHOWN actual size.
